Garden Drainage and Soakaways in Wicklow

Drainage & Irrigation by Kearney Landscapes in Wicklow and south Dublin 3-year guarantee

A waterlogged garden is miserable: a lawn you cannot walk on for half the year, beds that drown their plants, and water sitting against the house. In much of Wicklow it comes down to heavy clay soil and high rainfall with nowhere for the water to go. The good news is it is fixable, properly and permanently.

We diagnose where the water is coming from and where it needs to go, then install the right solution: French drains to intercept and carry water away, soakaways to take it down into the ground, and regrading to move surface water off the lawn. For the opposite problem, dry borders in summer, we fit drip irrigation linked to the mains or a rainwater tank.

02

Install the solution

We dig and lay French drains, soakaways, or regrade the surface, sized for your ground and Wicklow rainfall.

03

Test and reinstate

We test that the water moves as it should, then reinstate the lawn or beds so the garden looks untouched.

Good to know

Drainage & Irrigation: your questions answered

How much does garden drainage cost?

French drain installation starts at €150 per linear metre, and a soakaway system from €1,200, depending on the depth, the ground, and how far the water has to travel. We assess the garden first and quote a fixed price, because guessing at drainage is how people pay twice.

Why is my Wicklow garden waterlogged?

Usually heavy clay subsoil and high rainfall, with no path for the water to drain away. Clay holds water rather than letting it through, so it sits on the surface or pools against the house. The fix is to intercept the water with drains and give it somewhere to go, which is exactly what we install.

What is a French drain?

A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe that intercepts water in the ground and carries it away to a soakaway or outfall. It is one of the most effective ways to dry out a waterlogged lawn or keep water away from a house, and it works quietly underground once it is in.

What is a soakaway and do I need one?

A soakaway is a large underground void, usually crates or stone, that collects drainage water and lets it soak slowly into the ground. You need one where there is no drain or watercourse to send water to, which is common in Wicklow gardens. We size it to your rainfall and soil so it does not overflow.

Can you install garden irrigation too?

Yes. For borders and planters that dry out in summer, we fit drip irrigation that delivers water straight to the roots, linked to the mains or a rainwater harvesting tank and set on a timer. It saves water and keeps planting healthy through dry spells with no hand watering.
